Graduates are searching for the best pathway to reach their
goal and it's the time for the institutions to lure them towards management
courses. And as the entrance season approaches the dilemma for the management
aspirants continues – its MBA or PGDM? The confusion is further enhanced by the
numerous business schools that have sprung up claiming tall achievements and
the expanding MBA colleges in the university system.
Most of the people, after gaining one or two year experience
in management field, think of pursuing an MBA or a PGDM course, so as to
further polish their credentials and job prospects. While many think that there
is a difference between the two, few also perceive both as the same degree,
with just a difference in the name. It is very much important for an individual
to understand how both of them differ from each other and what their relevance
is.
Earlier, a PGDM was not recognised for higher studies like M.Phil
or Ph.D that seek a degree as a pre-requisite. But now PGDM certificates of
some top institutes are also being considered equivalent to MBA for higher
studies.
Difference between the
curriculum:
Although there are similarities between the curriculum of
both, differences exist as well. A student pursuing MBA will be studying more
of the theoretical aspects of management. An MBA institute will be following a
fixed curriculum as it will be based on the university guidelines.
A student pursuing a PGDM course will be gaining knowledge
regarding building soft skills and the programme is more industry-oriented. An
autonomous institute does not have to follow university standards, so it is
free to change its curriculum according to industry standards and change in the
business environment. The course will prepare you for a senior level position
in a company.
What's the difference,
qualitatively as well as in terms of recognition?
A Masters in Business Administration (MBA) is a degree course
offered by the colleges affiliated to the universities while the Post Graduate
Diploma in Management (PGDM) is a diploma course offered by the institutes that
are recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
But the teachers believe that MBA is not an end in itself but
a means. As senior management professor of OU, A. Vidhyadhar Reddy explains, an
MBA degree helps students develop skills in various spheres like finance,
operations, economics, teamwork, ethics and leadership. He says one should use
the programme to develop network with alumni, business and community leaders
that help in career growth.
While choosing the institution, teachers' advice that,
aspirants should look for the brand of the business school. The brand signifies
its established practices that provide better learning environment for personal
growth and its networking help students reach its alumni and industry easily. A
powerful brand is a tag that can be carried throughout the career.
Pursuing both these courses helps one in the growth of their
career, in getting a better position and obtaining a bigger salary.
PGDM
PGDM expands to Post Graduate Diploma in Management, the
confusion starts when you see the term Diploma. Many students are of the view
that it is a Diploma course and not a Degree; you are right to an extent that
it is a Diploma. The main reason why postgraduate courses are named as PGDM is
because when an Institute is an autonomous body (meaning it is not affiliated
to any University) and conducts management courses then such Institutes cannot
offer MBA degree. Even IIMs, XLRI's doesn't offer MBA degrees they only give
PGP Diploma or PGDM since they are autonomous and independent bodies. On
similar lines AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) is allowing approved
colleges to run a PGDM course. Some Business Schools offering this AICTE PGDM
course need not be autonomous, the PGDM course will be autonomous given by the
Institute & directly approved by AICTE, Ministry of HRD, Govt of India. A Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is a diploma course offered by the institutes that are recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and which are autonomous and not affiliated to any university. However, accreditation by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) makes an institute's PGDM course equivalent to an MBA.Just like how UGC - University Grants Commission controls the
Universities in India, AICTE - All India Council for Technical Education has
control on both technical and management courses and especially colleges not
under Universities. Even colleges offering UGC recognized MBA Programmes in
most cases should have AICTE approval.
Advantages of Autonomy
When an Institute secures autonomy they design their own
curriculum to be taught instead of following outdated University syllabus. I
have mentioned outdated syllabus because the syllabus change at University
level happens once in either 3 or 5 years. Technically syllabus change affects
university affiliating colleges, the books needs to be revised and the faculty
needs to upgrade themselves.
Where as in PGDM, since the colleges have autonomy the
curriculum can be updated regularly depending on the need in the Industry.
Hence one can say that PGDM courses are more Industry relevant, up to date as
compared to MBA courses. However University MBA Programmes too are of value, it
totally depends on the University one wish to do MBA. For instance FMS Delhi
offers MBA - Delhi University, Symbiosis offers MBA - Symbiosis University,
Narsee Monjee offers MBA.
While opting for PGDM courses, students must exercise caution
and check the accreditation status of the college. Colleges offering PGDM
courses needs to be accredited by AICTE. In case of MBA, the colleges are
affiliated to an University and Universities are controlled by University
Grants Commission (UGC) and the colleges may also get accredited by AICTE.
Is PGDM equal to MBA
Not necessarily that a PGDM is equal to MBA because if PGDM
is to be an equivalent to MBA then the college offering the PGDM course must
have accreditation from AIU (The Association of Indian Universities).
AIMA PGDM VS AICTE PGDM
AIMA PGDM or PGPM course is a certificate programme, AIMA
stands for All India Management Association an apex body which conducts MAT
examination. AIMA also offers PGDM which is clearly mentioned as a course
approved by AICTE and Distance Education Council. There is a lot of difference
between AIMA PGDM & AICTE PGDM.
Why are they pursued?
A Master in Business Administration (MBA) is a degree
course offered by the colleges affiliated to the universities. So, only
universities can offer MBA programmes.
High/low fees
Fees is high in case of PGDM as compared to MBA. MBA
institutes charge less fees as it is almost similar to university standard.
Are MBA and PGDM equal?
It is not mandatory that a PGDM is equal to MBA because then
the college offering the PGDM course must have accreditation from AIU (The
Association of Indian Universities).
